Group Collaboration & Presentation Practice Rooms: LSU Overview

GROK Overview Banner

General Information

The Group Collaboration and Presentation Practice Rooms is a project that is being developed in LSU Library. Both serve as a valuable resource to LSU students. See the descriptions below for the specifics on both types of rooms.

  • The Group Collaboration Rooms consist of a single computer with a large plasma screen, seating for groups of 4 to 8 people, and collaboration software. The collaboration software allows group members to connect to a session with their laptops via wireless if they choose. Once connected, participants can be granted control of the central computer or share their screens with the group on the large screen.
  • The Presentation Practice Rooms are configured much like multimedia classrooms, consisting of a lectern, computer, and very large plasma screen. Additionally, video cameras are installed so that students may record themselves delivering their presentations and review their performance at their leisure.

Additional Features

BeamYourScreen is the software that allows you to show your computer screen to other users for easy collaboration. All Group Collaboration and Presentation Practice Rooms come equipped with computers that have this software, which allow you to join a session with your laptop. For more information on the using BeamYourScreen, see: Collaboration Learning Spaces: Using BeamYourScreen.

By using this software for the project, users can begin a session by first connecting via wireless. Once connected, the software uses remote control to allow a designated participant the ability to control the main computer by using their own laptop mouse and keyboard. Secondly, the software allows for a "switch presenter," which means the screen of a designated laptop can be displayed on the large plasma screen. This simply enables students to collaborate in a number of different configurations without having to huddle around a small laptop.
