Tips for Multicast Ghosting

This article has not been updated recently and may contain dated material.

Ghosting via multicast performs cloning operations much more quickly than unicast, as expected. However, we have encountered several issues with ghosting using multicast.

Tips to Help Avoid Common Problems

  1. Use the default "Specified Multicast Address Range" settings. (See image below)
  2. Enable "Multicast Scope TTL" and set it to 16. (See image below)
  3. Ghost small groups of about 25 clients.
  4. If the process fails, try again. Chances are it might work the next time around.
  5. Transfer bandwidth will be limited to the slowest client/server connection.
